The Ultimate CLAUDE.md File

The configuration file that cuts context bloat, routes work to the right model, and saves money on API costs. Drop it into any project and Claude works smarter from the very first message.

Why most people repeat themselves to AI all day

Every session starts from nothing. You explain the project again. You re-state the rules again. You correct the same three habits you corrected yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. It feels like working with someone talented who has no memory, because functionally that is what is happening.

The fix is not a better prompt. A prompt is something you type once and lose. The fix is a standing brief the tool reads before you say a word, so the context, the rules, and the preferences are already in place by the time the first message lands.

That is what CLAUDE.md is. A plain text file in your project root that Claude Code picks up automatically at the start of every session. No plugin, no config, no setup. The file is the setup.

This one was refined over months of daily use, and the parts that matter most are the ones that stop bad habits from creeping back in when nobody is watching.

What it does

One file, five effects, none of which require you to change how you work.

01

Cuts context bloat so Claude stays fast and focused across long sessions

02

Routes work to the right model automatically, cheap Haiku for research, Sonnet for building

03

Saves money on API costs by pushing heavy work to background agents

04

Keeps Claude working autonomously instead of asking permission at every step

05

Sets standing rules Claude cannot quietly drift away from

How to use it

Four steps. The longest one takes about a minute.

Step 1

Drop it in your project root

The file must be named exactly CLAUDE.md and sit at the top level of your project. Claude Code looks for it there and nowhere else. No config, no plugin, no setup step.

Step 2

Delete the notes in brackets

The file ships with parenthetical notes explaining what each block does. They are there to teach you, not to instruct Claude. Strip them once you understand the section.

Step 3

Cut what does not apply

A rule you do not believe in is worse than no rule, because it trains you to ignore the file. Keep the sections that match how you actually work and delete the rest without guilt.

Step 4

Add your own iron laws

The value compounds when the file carries the things you are tired of repeating. Every correction you find yourself giving twice belongs in here permanently.

“I stopped explaining my project every morning. That is the whole review. It gave me back the first twenty minutes of every day.”

Questions

Do I need to be technical to use this?

You need to be able to create a text file in a folder. That is genuinely the whole prerequisite. Everything inside the file is plain English instructions, not code.

Does this work with any AI tool, or just Claude?

CLAUDE.md is read automatically by Claude Code. Other tools use different filenames for the same idea, so the content transfers even when the filename does not.

Will it slow my sessions down?

The opposite, which is the point. The file front-loads context that would otherwise be re-explained every session, and it pushes heavy work out to background agents.
